What size AC do I need for my room?
By Saheb Sareen. Updated 2026-10-29.
The answer
Buy a 1.5 ton AC for a Delhi bedroom up to 12 × 14 ft. On a top floor, buy a 1.5 ton 5 Star up to 12 × 12 ft. Above that, buy a bigger AC.1,3
- A top-floor room needs about 21% more cooling. Its roof bakes in the sun all day.3
- On a 45°C Delhi afternoon, a 3 Star loses about 11% of its cooling. A 5 Star keeps it all.4
- A 1 ton AC will not cool a 12 × 12 ft top-floor room in summer.1
Watch: a 1 ton and a 1.5 ton 5 Star AC in a top-floor room
- A top-floor bedroom, 12 × 12 ft, on Delhi's hottest afternoon.
- The sun bakes the roof. Heat keeps coming into the room.
- A 1 ton AC runs at full power. It gives only about 73% of the cooling the room needs.
- A 1.5 ton 5 Star gives all of it. The room reaches 24°C.
A simple drawing, worked out with our AC calculator and Daikin's method. The day is 45°C, the hottest of an average Delhi year.3,4
AC size by room size and floor
| 10×12 (120 sq ft) | 12×12 (144 sq ft) | 12×14 (168 sq ft) | 14×14 (196 sq ft) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ground floor | 1 ton 5 Star | 1.5 ton | 1.5 ton | 1.5 ton |
| Middle floor | 1.5 ton | 1.5 ton | 1.5 ton | 1.5 ton 5 Star |
| Top floor | 1.5 ton | 1.5 ton 5 Star | 1.8 ton | 1.8 ton 5 Star |
5 Star means only a 5 Star of that size keeps up. A bedroom for two, with afternoon sun on the window, on Delhi's hottest day.3,4
In rupees: one real example
| 1.5 ton 5 Star (FTKU50), our price today | ₹46,400 |
|---|---|
| 1.8 ton 3 Star (GTKL60), our price today | ₹46,600 |
Both keep a 12 × 12 ft top-floor bedroom cool on Delhi's hottest day. A 1 ton costs less, but it cannot.8,3
Choosing an AC size: do's and don'ts
Do
- Measure the room's length and width in feet.3
- Go bigger on a top floor, or with afternoon sun on the window.3
- On a top floor, choose a 5 Star if you want an inverter.2
- Use our AC calculator for a living room, office or kitchen.3
Don't
- Don't buy a 1 ton for a 12 × 12 ft top-floor room.1
- Don't buy a much bigger AC than you need. It is not efficient.5
- Don't size by the room alone. Floor and sun change the answer.1,3
What does ton mean on an AC?
- Ton tells you how much heat an AC can take out of a room.5
- It has nothing to do with the AC's weight.5
- Think of a water pump. A bigger pump empties a tank faster.
Why does a top-floor room need a bigger AC?
- The roof bakes in the sun all day.3
- It keeps giving off heat into the night.3
- A 12 × 14 ft bedroom needs about 21% more cooling on the top floor.3
- It uses more units too. See how many units an AC uses in an hour.6
Why does a 5 Star AC keep up on the hottest days?
- Daikin's 5 Star ACs keep full cooling up to 46°C outside. 3 Star ACs, up to 43°C.4
- Above that, an AC loses about 5% of its cooling for each degree.4,1
- Delhi's hottest afternoon reaches about 45°C. So a 3 Star loses about 11%.3

What happens if your AC is too small?
- It runs at full power almost all the time.1
- The room never reaches the temperature you set.1
- An inverter saves nothing then. Your bill is higher than the label says.1
- On a top floor, a non-inverter often makes more sense. Read inverter or non-inverter.2
Is a bigger AC always better?
- No. Daikin says an AC should match the room. Too big is not efficient.5
- A bigger AC also costs more to buy.8
- Pick the smallest size that keeps up on the hottest day.3
